Mental Skills Training II: Self-Talk & Focus Control

About Course

This session explores two essential mental skills: self-talk and concentration. You’ll learn how inner dialogue shapes confidence, stress levels, and execution, and how focused attention allows athletes to manage distractions under pressure. We’ll examine types of self-talk (positive, instructional, and negative) and introduce cognitive restructuring strategies to replace unhelpful thoughts. For focus, we’ll cover attentional styles, mindfulness, and short drill routines that sharpen concentration. Together, these tools create a practical toolkit for staying composed and clear-headed in competition.

What Will You Learn?

  • Inner Dialogue – Recognize the impact of self-talk on confidence, stress, and performance.
  • Types of Self-Talk – Differentiate positive, instructional, and negative forms, and learn how to reframe the unhelpful.
  • Cognitive Restructuring – Replace counterproductive cues like “don’t miss” with constructive ones such as “aim center.”
  • Attentional Focus – Understand broad vs. narrow and internal vs. external focus, and how each fits different tasks.
  • Focus Drills – Practice simple routines—such as 60-second breath counts—to strengthen concentration.
  • Reset Strategies – Develop quick mental resets to recover after mistakes.
  • Homework – Track your self-talk during training, log negative thoughts, and integrate daily focus exercises.
