Foundations of Kinesiology: Principles of Human Movement and Joint Function

About Course

This lecture covers fundamental concepts in kinesiology – the science of human body movement, its mechanisms and manifestations.

The lecture provides detailed explanations of kinematic chains (open and closed), joint positions (close-packed vs loose-packed), and the viscoelastic properties of tissues. Special attention is given to how forces interact with the musculoskeletal system and the progression from elastic to plastic deformation in tissues under stress.

What Will You Learn?

  • Kinematics - analysing body movements without considering forces, including translational and rotational movements
  • Osteokinematics - describing bone movements about three anatomical planes and degrees of freedom
  • Arthrokinematics - examining movements between joint surfaces, including rolling, sliding, and spinning motions
  • Kinetics - studying forces affecting the musculoskeletal system and their impact on movement and tissue deformation
